Role Description
We are seeking a strategic and technically proficient Hardware Systems Engineering Team Lead to drive the development and maintenance of advanced edge devices and source control electronics. This role requires a hands-on leader who can manage a multidisciplinary engineering team responsible for designing and optimizing edge hardware solutions that seamlessly integrate mechanical, electrical, and embedded systems. The role will be reporting to the Head of Product and is considered as part of the extended leadership team.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead and manage a cross-functional team of hardware, electrical, and mechanical engineers in the development and maintenance of cutting-edge edge devices.
- Oversee the entire lifecycle of edge device development, from concept design, prototyping, and system integration to production and long-term maintenance.
- Develop system architectures that optimize performance, energy efficiency, and reliability in resource-constrained environments.
- Ensure robust mechanical and thermal design strategies to meet environmental and operational requirements for edge applications.
- Collaborate with software teams to enable seamless communication and processing between edge devices and central systems.
- Conduct design reviews, performance optimization, and hardware testing to ensure product quality, scalability, and compliance with industry standards.
- Drive initiatives for predictive maintenance, diagnostics, and long-term hardware reliability for edge deployments.
- Define development schedules, resource allocation, and technical roadmaps aligned with strategic goals.
- Identify and mitigate technical risks throughout the design and production process.
- Maintain technical documentation, design processes, and best practices for scalable hardware development.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Systems Engineering, or a related field.
- 8+ years of experience in hardware or systems engineering, with at least 2-3 years in a leadership role overseeing both hardware and mechanical development.
- Proven track record in the design, development, and maintenance of edge devices or similar embedded systems.
- Extensive experience with managing vendor relationships directly without a separate procurement function.
- Proficiency in CAD tools (e.g., SolidWorks, Creo), PCB design software, and system modeling tools.
- Experience in ruggedized device design for harsh conditions.
- Strong problem-solving skills, project management expertise, and leadership abilities.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in industries such as oil and gas, industrial automation, or energy systems.
- Familiarity with wireless communication technologies, cybersecurity for edge devices, and firmware development.
- Knowledge of DFM (Design for Manufacturability) and DFA (Design for Assembly) principles.
- Understanding of regulatory standards for hardware and edge device deployments.
- Strong understanding of IoT, edge computing, embedded systems, and communication protocols (e.g., TCP/IP, UDP, MQTT, WITSML).
- Experience with the design, development, and management of internal testing and calibration systems.
Travel requirements:
- Travel may be required for meeting with vendors, field testing equipment and troubleshooting issues that have been escalated
- Up to 15%, but historically significantly less
